Treasured in all yoga lineages, the Bhagavad Gita is set on the battlefield, the teaching given in the middle, between the two sets of armies.
And this is where yoga happens, right in the thick of it, in the middle of the whirling wonder of life. The task of the yogic ‘warrior’ is to establish and then safeguard the peace. With images of arresting power and memorable beauty, the Gita tells us clearly how to do this.
Over this weekend James will focus on key, practical and inclusive teachings of the Gita:

- How we can transform difficulties into opportunities;
- Yoga as balance and skillfulness;
- How we can work with the gifts of our bodies, senses and minds to live in deeper peace and happiness.
Whether you’re brand new to yoga, this is your first contact with a Sanskṛt yoga text or you’ve been studying the yoga tradition for decades, James’ approach brings the rich practicality of the Bhagavad Gita to vivid life and invites us to deepen our appreciation of its timeless teaching and its real-life application.
The schedule for your weekend intensive:
Friday 10 November 2017
6-8.30pm Session One - Discussion
In this first session James will lay the foundations for the whole weekend, introducing the Bhagavad Gita and yoga as the practical school of Indian Philosophy.
Saturday 11 November 2017
8.30-11am Session Two - Principle-based āsana class
James will explore key teachings from the Bhagavad Gita through the practice of āsana.
The session is suitable for all ages and levels of experience as you’ll be working with principles and techniques that can be applied to all styles and modalities of yogāsana practice.
1-4pm Session Three - Discussion
You will continue your exploration of the Bhagavad Gita and its practical application, working from the original Sanskṛt text.

James will continue his exploration of key teachings from the Bhagavad Gita through the practice of āsana.
2-4.30pm Session Five - Discussion
You’ll continue your exploration of the Bhagavad Gita and its practical application.
James teaches applied yoga philosophy around the world and is known for bringing the traditional, scriptural teachings of yoga to vivid life, in ways which make clear their relevance and practical application in our lives today. His powerful kirtans invite participants to bathe in rich sound; cleansing, energising, and heightening awareness of the depth and glory of our inner selves.
James’ practice and teaching grow from their roots in the Shankaracarya Vedic tradition and the school of Kashmir Shaivism. His classes are infused with the ‘ras’ or flavour of joy associated with the devotional practice of kirtan, and of the bliss which is seen as underlying everything in the beautiful teachings of Shaivism.
He has been teaching yoga and leading kirtan regularly since 2003 and teaching since 1993. In 2005, while he was teaching English at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, James began studying Sanskrit. From 2008-2012, James spent about half his time in Mysore, where he completed his MA in Sanskrit, and where he continues to lead kirtan and courses on the Bhagavad Gita and Yoga Sutras, attended by international students of many Mysore’s renowned yogasana teachers.
