suicideTALK: Suicide Awareness for All
suicideTALK: Suicide Awareness Training for All
The World Health Organisation states that more people die from suicide than from all the world's conflicts, wars and natural disasters combined. Every 40 seconds a person somewhere in the world dies by suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of young deaths in the UK, and is the single biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK. The stigma associated with suicide means it is often a silent tragedy.
Yet, many suicides are preventable.
Most of us have been touched by suicide. We are more likely to come across someone who is having thoughts of suicide than we are to meet someone having a heart attack. However, we rarely feel equipped to help a person who is thinking about suicide.
Only a community can help prevent suicide - we all have a role to play.
suicideTALK is a short awareness raising session for all members of the community - regardless of prior training or experience - that aims to help make it easier to have conversations about suicide.
It is practice-oriented, and provides an opportunity for open and honest dialogue around suicide. By dispelling the myth that talking about suicide promotes suicide behaviour, suicideTALK provides a solid foundation for suicide prevention. It aims to reduce stigma and taboo around suicide and promote awareness within the community. It also provides an opportunity for networking among participants to explore ways you might choose to help prevent suicide in your community.
Ways to help a person with thoughts of suicide will be discussed. The pain of those touched by suicide will be acknowledged. However, suicideTALK is primarily an exploration of attitudes around suicide that aims to reduce stigma and promote awareness within the community.
suicideTALK is suitable for everyone over the age of 15 who wants to help prevent suicide.

suicideTALK is a great starting point for those who would like to learn more about suicide and suicide prevention.
Many participants go on to attend a safeTALK or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) workshop and learn life-saving suicide first aid skills. Together, these programmes are more than the sum of their parts: they combine to create a whole community that safer from suicide.
