Sky Coding Club
What to expect
Sky's Coding Club is for programmers of any level to work on their own coding projects. We have professional developers on hand to help if needed. We don't provide a set course or curriculum, but we can suggest a wide range of online resources if you don't know where to start.
It's an informal drop-in session, so don't worry if you're running late.
When you arrive, simply come in, let reception know who you are, and then pick any table and set yourself up. A volunteer will come and say hello. :)
What you'll need
- A laptop. (If possible, please make sure your laptop is charged, as there will be limited access to plug sockets.)
- (Optional) A cup. We're on a mission to reduce single use plastics in our workplace, so please bring a suitable drinks receptacle if you'd like to help yourself to complimentary hot and cold drinks.
- (Optional) Snacks. Coding is hungry work.
- Wifi: look for SkyVisitorWiFi. A pop-up should appear (try opening a website if it doesn't come up straight away). You have to register for an account, wait for an email (which can take a few minutes), and then log in with the details provided. Sorry it's a bit of a faff!
Who it's for
We are especially aiming to reach out to women who want to try coding, but men are welcome too! (And non-binary people, of course.)
Please share this event with anyone who you think might be interested - word of mouth is our best way of reaching potential new coders.
I've literally never coded before
Perfect! It's always really exciting to help someone take their first steps into programming. Don't be nervous, just bring your laptop and we'll discuss what you want to achieve, and show you what to do.
I just want to code without help from the volunteers
Totally understandable. We're experimenting with providing a way of indicating if you don't want to be disturbed so that you can get on with your work.
I'm a Sky employee, but I want to do my own coding
That's fine! Being a volunteer is entirely, well, voluntary. Please register here, so we know how many people are coming.
I'm an experienced coder, how can I help?
I'm under 18, can I come?
Yes - you'll just need to bring a parent/guardian with you.
Keep in touch
We really want you to keep in touch! Our slack channel can be found
How to get here
The pin on the Eventbrite map is slightly wrong – the three Sky office buildings are at the far end of Leeds Dock, and we will normally be meeting in the middle one. You will be able to see the cafe (and us) through the window. This link shows you the exact location of the door:
Press the buzzer by the door and come to the reception inside – we sit at the tables immediately around there.
