Saltaire, leisurely pace CHILDREN WELCOME
The walk at the edge of the historic town of Saltaire. It is a combination of two walks, the first is from the canal, to the river where there is a sculpture trail designed by children. Both adults and children enjoy the unexpected sculptures suggested by youngsters. We walk back along the canal, by Saltaire mills, to the start of the second walk.
The second walk is through the woodland close to Saltaire. There is the option of going on the Shipley Glen cable railway through the woods (now increased to £2.50 per adult / £1.50 concessions) or walking up the path.
The walk has lots of interest, the first part suitable for pushchairs, by the river but there maybe a major road to cross (dependent on if maintenance work is finished). The second part through lovely old woodland and is harder, rough underfoot and steep ish in parts. Walk is suitable for dogs, but mostly on a lead. So a varied and interesting walk just over 4 miles. At the end, Ice-creams from the boat on the canal, children s large play area or the Boat Inn which normally will welcome children but not dogs, also there are lots of cafe s near-by in the village.
Saltaire Mill also has a large book floor, home supplies mainly for the kitchen and galleries of art and the history of the textile mills
Directions - plenty of buses to or the train to Saltaire and we will start beside the canal close to the entrance to the Boat inn.
Parking - ample free car parking behind Salts Mill, Salts Mill Road, BD18 3LA. The large car park is to the right as you drive towards the mill. Once parked up, walk towards the mill, past the newish entrance, round the corner to the old entrance then take the steps on the left up to the bridge and cross the road, and down to the canal.
P.S. Fee is £1 to the host at the beginning of the walk.
