York St John University, Professor Dean Garratt will be presenting his Inaugural Lecture on Thursday 23 May 2019

Title: Dangerous and Hysterical: The Absurdity of Ofsted

The talk presents a critical analysis of the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) inspection framework drawing key insights from the work of Camus, Lacan and Foucault.

After qualifying as a teacher in 1993, Dean completed a PhD in the field of education before working in a variety of roles in higher education over the last twenty-two years. This included an eleven year spell at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), three years at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and six and a half years at the University of Chester. In this time he worked extensively on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, serving as course lead on several Master’s courses and playing a key role in the design and implementation of new doctoral curricula. Dean’s experience as a qualitative researcher and work with postgraduate students (both taught and research-focused) led to him taking a secondment as Director of the Graduate School and Associate Dean of Research at the University of Chester before moving more recently to York St John.
