Paul Taylor

Doors 11.45am (Music starts 12.00 midday) The Literary and Philosophical Society

Paul Taylor is an accomplished pianist and keyboard player specialising in improvisation. His music is evocative, alluring and unique; combining unusual harmonies and sonorities with an original and fluid technique. Honing his ambition over the past few years and releasing two albums to date, he is emerging as one of the most consistently interesting and innovative solo pianists in recent years, eschewing the conventions of jazz improvisation in favour of an unorthodox, harmonically complex and often compellingly beautiful musical language that is often inspired by the classical tradition; in an overheard conversation his music was once described as "like having Debussy in your living room" which is a pretty fair gauge. Nonetheless, his playing also encapsulates the restless capacity for invention that is a cornerstone of jazz. Paul’s third album is set for release in early 2018 on the back of an increasingly busy concert schedule that has recently seen him receiving international invitations and label interest from Hi 4 Head Records, whose artist roster has also included British heavyweights such as Trevor Watts, Veryan Weston, John Stevens and Barry Guy.

A massive thank you to all the Musicians / Venues / Promoters / Volunteers / Audiences and Supporters for your involvement in the first 'Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music'. All of the feedback that I have received with regards to the festival has been very positive and we had great audiences right across the board for every gig, with three shows selling out we had to turn people a way, it was busier than I think any of us could have predicted. Artistically the music was absolutely brilliant, and the festival fulfilled its ambition to bring the established audiences into the concerts, but also to encourage new listeners and create awareness of many of the different venues and promoters that are currently working in Newcastle. No matter what the role, it takes the commitment of everyone involved to make something like this successful and the willingness to embrace the idea. So, once again, many thanks for your support, I hope that this was the first of many. Wesley Stephenson (Festival Producer) www.facebook.com/newcastlefestivalofjazzandimprovisedmusic
