JRR Tolkien lived most of his life in Oxford, studying here before going off to fight in WW1. He worked for the Oxford University Press on his return and went on to become Professor of Medieval English at Merton College.
Shakespeare is known to have stayed at The Crown Inn at the Golden Cross. He was good friends with the landlord John Davenant and attended the christening of John's son William at the Church of St Martin (only Carfax Tower remains).
