NCP19-22 Embedding Technology in Level 3 Maths
This Work Group, run in partnership with the Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP), will explore practical approaches for integrating technology in the A level Mathematics (or Further Mathematics) curriculum. Participants will explore where, when and how to use technology to enhance students’ learning, understanding and experience, and will develop their own technology skills. The underlying theme of each Work Group is to develop participants as technology champions in their own departments.
The programme, which is free to attend, runs across 3 dates. You must be able to attend all 3 dates:
- 12th November 2019 09.30 – 15.00
- 3rd December 2019 09.30 – 12.00 (Optional 16-19 Network meeting will follow this 13.00 – 16.00)
- 25th February 2020 09.30 – 12.00 (Optional 16-19 Network meeting will follow this 13.00 – 16.00)
All sessions take place at Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Newcastle.
Who is this for?
Teachers of A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics or Core Maths, and especially those wishing to develop the use of technology in A level teaching with others in their department. This project is not designed to focus on developing new technology skills for beginners from scratch. We can only accept one member of staff per school, please be mindful of this when applying for a place on this programme.
What is involved?
Through face-to-face Work Group meeting days, participating teachers will develop their practice to further embed the appropriate and effective use of technology in the study of the linear A level Mathematics, and to champion the use of technology within their own mathematics department.
Work Group activity
- 3 half days of workshops with other practitioners on the programme
- Independent study and setting-based work including gap tasks and evaluation
- Online discussion as part of a professional community
- Support and mentoring from Work Group Lead
Participant teachers will increase their confidence to further develop their own technology skills and further embed the appropriate and effective use of technology in their lessons. Colleagues in the participant teachers’ schools will benefit from this increased confidence and knowledge through the technology champion role.
The opportunities to use technology within CPD for maths teachers at participant schools will also be enhanced through the technology champion role. As a result of these developments, students in participant schools will, through increased and improved use of technology, develop improved conceptual understanding and engagement with mathematics.
Expectations of participants and their schools
Participants are expected to be working in a classroom environment and/or involved with individual or small group support and intervention. All participants are expected to attend all the sessions and complete gap tasks in their schools between the sessions. They will also be asked to keep a learning log for their own use and contribute to the national evaluation process, probably through a short online survey after the Work Group has finished
When booking you will be asked to give your NCETM Username. We ask for this as we will use the NCETM website to coordinate your programme evaluations, in order to report to the DfE. If you do not already have an NCETM username, please create one here
This Work Group is free of charge. However, Great North Maths Hub will charge £40 for non-attendance or cancellation less than 7 days prior to each session.
As part of our role in leading the Great North Maths Hub, we collect and hold a certain amount of data about individuals involved in our work. The data includes name, role (with respect to hub work), school, email address, NCETM username and (in some cases) telephone number. The agreement between us and the Department of Education requires us to monitor and evaluate our work as a Maths Hub, and this is the legal basis for the data that we hold, on, for example, participation in the Work Groups that we coordinate. Such data is reported on a regular basis to the NCETM.
