Access Space welcomes the wonderful Miki Yui, joining us as part of her European tour to promote “Mills”, her 6th studio record, and the latest release on the remarkable Cuspeditions label.

"Her creations emulate nature´s own structures, and they go well beyond trying, they succeed where others fail. Her music is not a river, in fact it overflows in all directions imaginable, and it seems like the sounds and their interaction describe a kind of natural evolution.”

Miki Yui's sound is as playful as it is mesmerizing.

Also performing will be the longstanding duo of Ryoko Akama (electronics) and Charlie Collins (waterphone & metal). Their exploration of the minutiae and kipple of sound results in a music of great concentration and inner beauty. Quietness made large.

Miki Yui is an artist/musician born in Tokyo and based in Düsseldorf Germany. She plays sampler, synthesizer and solar oscillators, and works in the fields of music, drawing, installation, and performance. Delicate signals, from a tiny hiss to a distant hum, are crafted into pieces of music charged with narrative tension. Ever since her first album in 1999 she has been known for her own unique style of composition, utilizing electronics, field recordings and recorded sounds, balancing between minimalistic and organic rhythms, subtle nuances and turbulent hooks. She invites listeners to extended listening, to mesmerize in an acoustic journey.

She has previously released five solo albums for diverse labels. Her new album “Mills” is out from CUSPEDITIONS (Manchester) in April 2018. She has collaborated with Klaus Dinger, Rolf Julius, Carl Stone and Rie Nakajima.

Parallel to her own solo work, she takes care of the archive of her former partner Klaus Dinger (NEU!, La Düsseldorf).

Ryoko Akama is a UK-based composer and performer whose work, ranging from text compositions to sound installations, pursues minimal, reductive, cumulative, and contemplative experiences, while Charlie Collins is a creative percussionist, free polyrhythmic drummer, and sound artist, whose interest in East Asian percussion and rhythm technique is evident in much of his recent work. They have collaborated on numerous live projects since 2013, including work with Gino Robair, Makoto Oshihiro, lo wie, Yoko Ikeda, Suzueri, Wakana Ikeda, Yoko Miura, and Neil Carver. Ryoko directs the melange edition label, is co-editor of the independent publisher mumei, and founded ame, the Yorkshire based arts hub, while Charlie is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top of the Pops
