Mahler 1 – Transforming the Symphony
The Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra, one of London's leading and longest established amateur orchestras, is delighted to be part of the Waterloo Festival, an annual summer festival of arts and inspiration, held in and around St John's Waterloo. It celebrates arts, music, ideas and new talent in a beautiful setting in the beating artistic heart of London.
We would love to welcome everyone to this free event in which we'll show why Mahler's 1st Symphony was such a landmark in transforming what we think of as a symphony, with musical examples played by the orchestra and commentary from our conductor Christopher Stark. It will be open to all-comers and ages and should be a lovely hour of music on its own, or as an appetiser for our concert the following week which will include a concerto to be played by the ERSO Soloist of the Year as well as Mahler's epic 1st Symphony.
