Aimed at teachers in primary schools at KS1, including co-ordinators

This practical course will support key stage 1 teachers in developing their planning and practice for geography in the 2014 National Curriculum. It will support your subject understanding and the development of outstanding practice within the subject: looking in particular at fieldwork, locality studies and resourcing. It will look briefly at skills, including mapwork, progression and assessment, and the subject’s contribution to the wider curriculum.

Aims and outcomes

-Gain an understanding of how to plan for outstanding and inspiring Geography with young children, in response to National Curriculum 2014
-Consider opportunities, issues, activities and progression in local fieldwork
-Explore activities, issues and approaches to studying localities, both local and in distant places
-Become familiar with phase specific resources that support high quality Geography teaching.

09.00-09.30: Coffee and registration

09.30-11.00: Session 1 - The geography curriculum at KS1

11.00-11.15: Refreshment break

11.15-12.45: Session 2 - Getting started with primary fieldwork

12.45-13.30: Lunch

13.30-15.30: Session 3 - Exploring localities, near and far
