Feminist Folk Songs - 8 week course
Feminist Folk Songs – An eight week harmony singing course running April 22nd – June 10th 2020 in Easton (Wednesday evenings)
During this course we will learn and sing songs in harmony from a variety of folk traditions where the heroes and storytellers are women. The songs we’ll learn tell of women sailing the 7 seas, witching, finding inventive ways to escape peril and rising up against oppression. The songs are in turn beautiful, quirky, full voiced and rollicking, powerful, lamenting, and victorious.
Harmony singing and performance – the main focus of the course will be harmony singing and having fun.
Improve your vocal technique – each of the sessions will focus on a different aspect of vocal technique and you will be learn how to project your voice, harness its power, and explore different colours of tone.
Learning about women's history – Within each two hour rehearsal there will be 15 minutes or so for us to discuss the background to the songs, plus ideas on women’s empowerment, feminism and social change. We will do this from the perspective of creating a society which loves and values women and men equally.
All genders welcome – Women, men, trans and non-binary people all have an important role in this course. We welcome the richness of your voices and your unique perspective. Join us!
Dates: We will rehearse weekly on a Wednesday evening from 7.30 for 8 weeks from the 22nd April – 10th June.
Venue: Desperate Men Rehearsal Studio, Mivart St Studios, Mivart Street, Easton, BS5 6JL
Performance: We will work towards a fun, friendly performance at the end of the course, date TBC.
Missing Rehearsals: If you think you will miss more than one rehearsal please book onto a future course instead where you’ll be able to participate more fully. There’s a progression to the material we’ll be learning and you’ll be an important part of our 8 week choir which has limited places!
*Material – All songs will be different from those taught on Jenny’s one day feminist folk songs course. HOWEVER we will revisit 3 or 4 of the songs taught on Jenny's recent 6 week course held in Autumn 2019, plus learning 3 new ones.
