Description Following the last two year’s incredibly successful events, we are thrilled to announce details of our third Defying Dementia Day. This one-day event is an opportunity to bring together everybody who has an interest in dementia – people living with dementia, staff & volunteers of dementia associations, family members, clinicians, care professionals and scientists – to share and learn from one another. Registration opens at 9.15am, along with the activities and marketplace. The talks start at 10:00am and the day concludes at 4:00pm. Agenda Lectures will take place throughout the day, with the morning focusing on developments in research, and the afternoon focusing on living with dementia. The lectures are all 25 minutes in length, allowing 5 minutes for questions. 09:15 - 10:00: - Registration and Marketplace 10:00 - 10:10: - Welcome and introduction 10:10 - 10:35: - Understanding dementia: Types, causes, symptoms and treatments 11:00 – 11:20: - Break 11:20 – 11:45: - Getting creative and social: The benefits of community activities for people living with dementia and their carers 11:45 – 12.10: - Local dementia research: How to get involved, and why you should! 12:25 – 13:00 : - Lunch break with Demonstrations 13:05 - 13:30: -  "Let's talk about growing old and staying well!" 13:30 - 13:55: - Power to the Patient: Does the Doctors ethos of 'Do no harm' really offer this? 13:55 - 14:15: - Break 14:15 - 14:40: - Wills, Powers of Attorney, planning for care and other legal issues 14:40 - 15:05: - The management of perceived challenging behaviours in dementia  15:05 - 15:50: - Panel discussion with people living with dementia  15:50 - 16:00: - Closing remarks Other Information A ‘marketplace’ and activities will be open throughout the day that will offer information on local support and ideas for people living with dementia. Carers can attend free of charge, but must still register for a ticket. Tickets are £8 for general admission, and £5 for concessions. All ticket sales go directly to Defying Dementia – Alzheimer’s research at Lancaster University. Online ticket sales are live until 4pm on Friday 18th October. Any remaining tickets can be purchased on the door. The conference will be chaired by Dr Penny Foulds, Lancaster University and MAC Clinical Research, and Dianne Smith, Matron for Dementia, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust. Free parking is available on campus (see here for the campus map). You are advised to bring your own packed lunch to the event, however sandwiches etc will be available from a shop four minute walk from the venue.
