Speaker: Professor Keith Hunter, Unit of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine, School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield

Title:   “Oral cancer and Precancer – an update or primary care

Summary:  This will be an interactive presentation which will cover the varied appearances of the oral mucosa, with a particular emphasis on the assessment of lesions which are pre-malignant or malignant. 

Aims: I will outline the concept of risk of oral cancer with respect to:

  • Identifying “at risk” patients
  • Identifying lesions/signs/symptoms to be worried about (and those less so)
  • What to do about a suspicious lesion

Objectives: at the end of this session you should have:

  • Increased knowledge and understanding of oral pre-malignancy and malignancy
  • Enhanced recognition of suspicious signs and symptoms
  • An outline of the links between clinical features and pathological changes
  • Strengthened knowledge on referral pathways and follow-up protocols
