Strauss Till Eulenspiegel
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3
Bartók Concerto for Orchestra

Juraj Valčuha conductor
Evgeni Bozhanov piano

Once upon a time… a practical joker causes mayhem in medieval Germany: you’ll hear every bang, crash and giggle in Strauss’s outrageous Till Eulenspiegel. Exiled and ill, Béla Bartók looks into his soul and finds a roof-raising shout of joy in his irresistibly colourful Concerto for Orchestra. And the 25-year-old Beethoven is a man in a hurry, out to make a serious splash. With Juraj Valčuha and Evgeni Bozhanov, two of the hottest properties on the European concert scene, both making their Liverpool debuts, you are in for a treat.

Bartok's concerto for orchestra was the first LP I ever bought with my pocket money at the age of 7. Not only a splendid orchestral showpiece but a powerful piece of work with great rhythms and orchestration.

It was fabulous last night - in the home of its 1945 UK premiere too!

Some of the tempi were astonishingly slow but it was beautifully detailed and very well played.

Some of the tempi were atonishingly fast too! Coming up soon, Britten's Young Person's Guide, given it's premiere in Liverpool a year after the Bartok! London's got nothing on us...
