Ceramics: Functional pots (wheelthrown and handbuilt)
This five week evening class, run by both Fiona and Chris, is suitable for beginners who would like to learn about making functional pots (rescheduled from March). You are also welcome to join the course if you have a little prior experience and would like to refresh or build upon your skills. Various approaches and techniques will be demonstrated, and you can then make pieces of your own design.
It will focus on mainly on throwing*, as well handbuilding, practical pots for your table and kitchen. There are many approaches to functional work, and Chris and Fiona will introduce a few of these. The course will explore ways to plan and make specific forms on the wheel (plates, bowls, cups etc), alongside handbuilt and press moulded pieces. We will look designing and making handles, feet and spouts both for the handbuilt and thrown work, and making repeat forms. Different approaches to surface decoration will be covered- applying colour, texture and pattern with slips, and glazing. Each weekly session is from 6 - 8.30pm on Thursdays. New processes will be introduced each week, and you will learn about prepping, handling and working with the clay at different stages. There will be time allocated for everyone on the wheel each week.
Small class sizes so lots of hands-on support; all materials and tools are provided; and all work will be fired for you.
£175 per person, inclusive of materials, preparation and firings.
Cyan Clayworks is a working studio and not-for-profit space. Both Chris and Fiona have many years experience of making, exhibiting and teaching ceramics at all levels.
