Brahms - A German Requiem
Requiem - Max Reger (1873-1916)
Passacaglia in C minor - J. S. Bach (1685-1750) arr. Max Reger
Ein deutsches Requiem - Johannes Brahms (1833-97)
Our second concert in the great 'B' series - beginning with Berlioz's "Grande Messe des Morts" and concluding with Bruckner's "Mass in E minor" (alongside a selection of his motets and organ music) and Beethoven's "Missa solemnis", continues with Brahms's "Ein deutsches Requiem".
Sung in the original German, with the composer's own reimagining of the orchestral accompaniment as piano duet, the choir put this greatly-loved choral masterpiece in perspective, with music closely studied by Brahms - Bach's great organ Passacaglia - itself reimagined as piano duet by Max Reger, whose own Requiem, setting a poem by Friedrich Hebbel (1813-63), opens the concert.
